OBJECTIVES (National Standards for World Language learning, 5 C’s)

1. Communication

You will be able to communicate by providing and obtaining information and expressing feelings and emotions.

• You will be able to comprehend the main ideas of oral and written narratives in the target language. 

• You will be able to present information to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.

2. Culture  

• You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the products, practices and underlying     

       perspectives of the target language culture.

3. Connections

• You will be able to reinforce your knowledge of other disciplines through the use of target language

  ( i.e., songs, geography, etc.).

4. Comparison

• You will be able to identify and describe the similarities and differences between the target language     

  and your native language.

5. Community

• You will be able to demonstrate evidence of becoming life-long learners by using the target language 

   both in and out of class for personal enrichment (i.e., cooking/eating food of the target language 

   culture, participating in the cultural events, etc.).

The following languages are currently offered:  Chinese, Chinese Honors, Spanish, Spanish Honors, Spanish AP, Japanese, Japanese Honors, French, French Honors, Cantonese for native speakers,

Primary Language Arts (Cantonese Immersion Program).

 

World Language 1/2 (First year) Grade 9-12

This is a beginning course that emphasizes the development of communication skills and awareness of the target language cultures through activities and materials designed to develop language skills. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the language to be used naturally and spontaneously in real life situations.

           

World Language 3/4  (Second Year) Grade 9-12

            This is a continuation and expansion of skills mastered in the first year with continued emphasis on all language skills. Students are encouraged to create with the language using everyday routines, common events, and narrations of past and future actions.

            Prerequisites: World Language 1-2 with grade of C or higher, or recommendation by teacher.

 

World Language 5/6 (Third Year) Grade 10-12

            This course is designed to review previously learned materials and to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills more complex communication through cultural and literary selections.                         Prerequisites: World Language 3-4 with grade B or higher or recommendation by teacher.

 

World Language 7/8 (Fourth year) Grade 11-12

            This course is designed to develop students’ language fluency through the study of articles from magazines and newspapers, radio and TV broadcasts, documentaries and films, and all genres of literary selections that enhance students’ awareness of and appreciation for the culture, history, and contemporary society of the target language cultures.

            Prerequisites: World Language 5-6 with grade of B or higher, E courses, or recommendation                                         by teacher.

 

E Courses (Language for Native Speakers) Grade 9-12

            These courses permit students to enhance their already existing language skills. The E courses focus on all areas of language development with emphasis on reading and writing skills and feature a significant study of culture, literature, business language and reading.

            Prerequisites: Recommendation by teacher.

 

Honor Courses (Second and third years) Grade 10-12

            These courses provide students with extended content and additional workload. Students engage in more challenging communicative activities and develop critical reading skills. There is a comprehensive oral and written final examination.

            Prerequisites: Recommendation by teacher.

 

AP Spanish Language  Grade 11-12

            This course follows the College Entrance Examination Board course description for advanced placement work in languages. It prepares students to take the AP examination in May.

            Prerequisites: Spanish 7-8, Spanish Honors 5-6 or 3-4E, or recommendation by teacher.
