The English Department

Department Head: Beverly Buchanan

English is the largest department at Lincoln. Students need to pass four years of English in order to graduate from high school and need to get a C or better in each class to qualify for university application credit.All classes are State Standards based each having a specific focus. Lincoln English classes are:

9th Grade World Literature

The anthology is McDougall Littell’s The Language of Literature. Some of the individual works read are Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, and Great Expectations.

10th Grade Ethnic Literature

The anthology is McDougall Littell’s The Language of Literature. Some of the individual works read are A Raisin in the Sun, Yellow Raft in Blue Water, Bless Me, Ultima,The Kitchen God’s Wife or Joy Luck Club, Sula, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, and Black Boy.

11th Grade American Literature

The anthologies used are McDougal Littell’s The Language of Literature or Scribner’s American Literature. Some of the individual works read are The Crucible, The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Song of Solomon, The Scarlet Letter, The Catcher in the Rye, and Death of a Salesman.

12th Grade British and European Literature

The anthologies used are Glenco’s British Literature and Carlsen’s British and Western Literature. Some of the individual works read are Antigone, Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Hamlet or Macbeth, Brave New World, Crime and Punishment, and Frankenstein.

Advanced Placement and Honors

We also have 9th, 10th, and 11th honors classes as well as 12th grade Advanced Placement. Students must apply for these classes. Criteria include Star Test score of 5 in English Language Arts, previous English class grade of A or B, teacher recommendation, and an application essay score of at least 6 out of a possible 10. Students in 11th honors may take the Advanced Placement Language and Literature test. Student in the 12th grade AP class must take the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition test. All AP tests are open to any student who has an interest and pays approximately $83 per test.

Both Journalism, which produces our monthly Lincoln Log, and Yearbook are under the umbrella of the English Department.
