Special Education Teacher
I have worked my entire life in a variety of special education positions. I received my credendential in 1996 and have been with the district for 15 years. I have done this work my whole life as my mother was involved in the field. My first 5 years in SFUSD I was an inclusion teacher in grades k-12, covering 2 schools every year so I received a good overview of all the grades. I have been at Lincoln High School since 2000 and have been teaching a variety of students; from wheelchairs and tube fed to 5th grade level. I am indeed a one room schoolhouse.
I believe the emphasis in high school is real life preparation, therefore I am community based; we will go out up to 2 days a week. We have a cooking class which incorporates nutrition, shopping, money and thus leads into math and reading. My class has on campus and off campus jobs for which they receive minimum wage paychecks, mailed to their home. I help the parent and student pick out a good transition class for the magic age of 18!
My students do receive a Certificate of Achievement when they walk the stage as seniors in their cap and gown. They will go on until age 22 in SFUSD transition classes until age 22. It is inspiring to see the huge distances traveled from Freshmen to Seniors.
