Gifted & Talented Education (G.A.T.E.) Overview

GATE MISSION STATEMENT

"The arts are not just expressive and affective. They are deeply cognitive. They develop essential thinking tools –pattern recognition and development; mental representations of what is observed or imagined; symbolic, allegorical, and metaphorical representations; careful observation of the world; and abstraction from complexity." (David A. Sousa, 2001, How the Brain Learns)

The GATE program at Abraham Lincoln High School recognizes that students are best served when they have access to curriculum that stretches their beliefs about their own intellectual and creative capacities. Moreover, many GATE identified students underperform in school. To this end we strive to:

1)
Encourage GATE students to choose a challenging course load that will prepare them for entrance to a four year college and encourage them to be successful and joyful learners.
2)  Ensure that all students who demonstrate the capacity to excel in advanced level classes have access to them; including but not limited to honors and AP classes.

3) Continue to identify students who would benefit from a more challenging curriculum.

4)  Ensure that all students have the opportunities to develop the skills necessary to work at their peak performance level.

5)  Promote teacher's professional development focused on the creation of engaging and relevant curriculum and teacher teaming.
