Edgar Wayne Thompson

 

        Edgar Wayne Thompson was a member of the Spring Class of 1965 at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco.

        He was born on July 15, 1947, to Robert Lewis and Barbara LaRue (Wright) Thompson in San Francisco. His father was born in Louisiana on June 24, 1924, and died on September 13, 1980, in San Mateo County, California.

        Edgar had three brothers born in San Francisco: Robert Earl, born on May 6, 1946, and graduated from Abraham Lincoln; Lewis Charles, who was born on October 20, 1948, and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in the Spring Class of 1966; and Melvin Ray, born on February 11, 1950, and graduated from Balboa High School in San Francisco.

        His father married, second, Robbie (Hunter), who was born in San Francisco: Marvin James, born on July 5, 1958, and Wanda Larue, born on July 22, 1959. Marvin and Wanda graduated from Balboa High School.

        Edgar attended Bret Harte and Sheridan Elementary Schools and James Denman Middle School in San Francisco before entering Abraham Lincoln High School in 1961. He graduated in the Forty-eighth Commencement Class of Abraham Lincoln on June 16, 1965.

        The 1962-63 Roundup states the following about Edgar Thompson ". . . Social Science and English Major . . . Basketball . . . Wrestling."

        He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after graduation. Upon completion of basic and advanced training, he was assigned the Military Occupation Specialty Code of a rifleman. He received orders for assignment to the Vietnam Area of Operations. However, it is unknown to which specific Marine unit he was eventually assigned. He was killed in action in Quang Tri Province on September 10, 1967. At the time of his death, he was a private first class and 20 years old.

        He is listed on the Vietnam Combat Area Casualty List, 1957-1986, Record of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, as having been killed in action in South Vietnam.

        Edgar W. Thompson's name is engraved on Panel 26E, Row 27, on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D. C.

        His remains were returned to the United States and interred on September 27, 1967, in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, in Section 2B, Grave #3568. His father, Robert Lewis Thompson, a World War II Navy veteran, was interred with him on September 3, 1980.
