Leland Zelinsky

Leland Zelinsky was a member of the Spring Class of 1949 at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco.

        He was born October 18, 1931, to Paul Clark and Alice (Lutzer) Zelinsky in San Francisco. His father was born on October 12, 1904, in California and died on February 2, 1990, in Riverside County, California. His mother, Alice, was born on June 30, 1907, and died on October 9, 1969, in San Francisco.

 

        Leland had a younger sister, Jane Suzanne, who was born in San Francisco on October 22, 1934. She graduated from Lowell High School of San Francisco in 1952. She Married Richard N. Bernstein in San Francisco. Five children were born to this marriage in San Francisco: Scott Leland, Greg Maurice, Lia Wilma, Amy and Kate.

 

        Greg married Patricia Lock, and two children were born to this marriage in Freemont, California: Megan Elizabeth, and Leland David.

        Kate married Lee Amon. They had two children born in Fremont: Joseph Richard, and Sarah Betsy.

        Amy married Douglas Valle and two children were born to this marriage: Erika Nicole was born in Manhatten, and Kiera Jane was born in Brawley, California.

 

        Leland entered Abraham Lincoln in 1946 and became interested in soccer. This interest led to his eventual selection as a full back on the Varsity Soccer Team. He left his mark at Lincoln for posterity as an artist, especially a cartoonist, for the 1948-1949 Lincoln Roundup. There are many of his drawings through-out the Roundup. His writeup in the Roundup. states:". . . called Lee . . . nickname: Zeke . . . likes food, art, The Dutchess, soccer . . . dislikes homework." He graduated with the Sixteenth Commencement Class on June 22, 1949.

 

        He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve after he graduated from Lincoln. However, he completed a few semeters at City College of San Francisco before being called to active duty. Following basic training and advanced training, he was promoted to private first class and subsequently ordered to the Far East Command (FECOM) for duty in Korea.

 

        After arriving in Korea, he was assigned to the Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division. He became a casualty on June 10, 1951. At the time, the 1st Marine Division was battling its way toward the infamous "Punch Bowl" north of the Hawachen Reservoir in the Northeast Sector of the battle line.

 

        Lee, as he was known in high school, is listed in the extract from the Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, of Military Personnel, Who Died from Hostile Action in the Korean War, 1950-1957, from San Francsico.
